Why I Coach
"I coach youth hockey because I am passionate about developing both the athletic and personal growth of players. I want to create an environment where kids can improve their hockey skills while also building their character, teamwork, and confidence. For me, part of the joy of coaching is the process Coaching allows me to give back to the game that has had such a positive impact on my life and share that with others."
Coaching Approach
"My coaching approach centers on positive reinforcement, goal-setting, and continuous improvement. I believe in creating a supportive environment where players are challenged to step outside their comfort zones and grow as individuals. I focus on both the physical and mental aspects of the game—strengthening skills while building confidence and resilience. By emphasizing hard work, teamwork, and personal responsibility, I help kids become better hockey players and well-rounded individuals."
Coaching Experience
Coach Dunn brings his passion for hockey and more than 20 years coaching experience to the ice.
"My hockey journey began at the age of four in Los Angeles, where I first laced up my skates and fell in love with the game. I was fortunate to play at a high level, which allowed me to travel across North America and build lifelong friendships with teammates and competitors alike. After transitioning from playing to coaching, I spent the last 20 years in Los Angeles as a coach and hockey director, working with players from the mite level to AAA midgets and NCAA Division 1 players. Last year, I moved to Wisconsin, where I started coaching with the Komets after enrolling my daughter in the DEVOS program. It was a natural progression for me, as I wanted to continue my involvement in the sport and share my experiences with the next generation of players.
I have been involved in hockey since a young age, playing at competitive levels and traveling across North America, finishing out my youth hockey career with the Los Angeles Jr. Kings as a AAA Midget player and finished my competitive career in the NAHL, one of the years in which I won a national championship under the leadership of Tampa Bay Lightning’s John Cooper, with all of these experiences giving me a deep understanding and appreciation of the game. After transitioning into coaching, I have worked with players of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced athletes, helping them develop their technical skills and personal character.
In addition to my coaching experience, I have had the privilege of working as a Power Skating Coach for Robby Glantz Power Skating, where I traveled across the country, providing specialized training to players seeking to enhance their skating technique. I hold a Level 5 USA Hockey Coaching Certification and am a certified personal trainer, which enables me to incorporate a strong focus on physical conditioning, strength, agility, and endurance into my coaching.
Additionally, I served as a Hockey Director for multiple clubs in California, where I oversaw teams ranging from 8U to 18U, including in-house programs to AAA teams. This leadership role allowed me to mentor coaches, develop training programs, and ensure that players at all levels received the guidance and resources needed to succeed both on and off the ice.
With my broad experience in coaching, training, and program management, I’m able to offer a well-rounded approach that not only focuses on hockey skills but also emphasizes personal growth and character development. I’m committed to fostering a positive, supportive environment where players can thrive and reach their full potential."
Testimonials & Endorsements
"Any club is lucky to have Alec as a coach in their organization.
Having worked for me at my Power Skating Camps for many years, I witnessed what an excellent hockey skills coach he is… but I also got to see first hand his excellent Youth Hockey coaching abilities, as he was my older son’s head coach — and he was definitely instrumental in helping him become a top level player, first at Prep School and then 4 years of NCAA Hockey."
- Robby Glantz (NHL Power Skating Instructor)
"I first started playing for Alec when I was 10 years old. He was the best coach I could’ve asked for at that age. He was strict when you needed him to be, fun loving in the right moments, and always have a joke or a smart comment ready to go. Alec made sitting in 2 hour traffic for 10 miles enjoyable for the 7 years that I did it. He influenced me and my hockey career so much so that even to this day, playing college hockey his words and advice mean so much to me. The way he thinks and speaks about the game is inspiring and motivational. He is the coach that every dedicated hockey player wants to play for."
- Hayden Goldstein (Lake Superior State University Men’s Captain)
