Why I Coach

"Hockey has taught me valuable life lessons, such as being a part of a team ... perseverance through hardship, dedication, and responsibility ... that I still carry with me and which continues to shape me into the person I am today. The opportunity to pass those lessons along to the next generation of players and foster a love of this great game is why I wanted to get involved with coaching."

Coaching Approach

"My personal approach to coaching is that the journey is more important than the outcome. Especially at younger ages, the focus should be on what players can control. Skills and hockey sense come with time and practice. Attitude and effort are completely in the control of the individual. If a player shows a great attitude towards their teammates, coaches, refs, opponents, etc. and gives each shift their full effort the results will come.

Reflecting back on my own hockey journey, I know its very rare for goaltenders to receive any direct or impactful coaching focused exclusively on the position. Being able to teach the right skills and mindset that goalies need to excel at a young level is something that I am extremely passionate about. What motivates them? Why did they want to be a goaltender? I adapt my coaching style to the player and emphasize fun and progress above everything else."

Coaching Experience

"I started playing hockey at an early age and was always drawn to the goaltending position. Although I started ice hockey at a later age, I have always been a goalie. The responsibility to your teammates and the need to always hold yourself accountable is what I have always loved about the position. Throughout high school, I played for Central States programs in Northern Illinois. I have three nieces that play hockey, all at one point with the Kenosha Komets. My six year old son learned how to skate and play through the DEVO program. When he officially joined the team this year, I quickly volunteered and have loved seeing him and his teammates continue to grow and develop.

Being a goaltender for 25 years, a lot of what I have learned has been self taught and adapted from other goalies along the way. I am someone who love to constantly learn and is willing to adapt as the position evolves."
